Holy Cross and St. Aloysius Campuses of the Kaukauna Catholic School System came together for their last All System Liturgy for the school year. The second graders were celebrated for making their First Holy Communion. After Liturgy the First Communicants led the school out of church in procession to crown Mary in a May Crowning Ceremony singing Ave Maria. Fr. Tom Pomeroy and Fr. Jerry Pastors led the students in prayer as Mary was crowned. Second graders were treated with a special cake and cards made by KCSS students. Congratulations Second Graders on making your First Holy Communion.

Four Legged Friends

The Kindergarten class at St. Aloysius Campus was visited by two four-legged friends, Moses and Rudy. They are part of a program through Outagamie County Humane Society called "Kids Read to Canines" in which the dogs are specifically trained for this purpose. The children in the class took turns reading a book to the attentive listeners. This is a wonderful opportunity to become more motivated to read, as well as, make a new friend.

Conservation Canyon

K-2 students at St. Aloysius Campus enjoyed the production "Conservation Canyon" sponsored by Kaukauna Utilities. Students learned about energy and conservation with the help of characters like Sheriff Carrie Gooper, Reginald the Cow, Blabby Daze, Wild Bill Hitchcock, and Ron of the Cons Gang.

Open House Art & Technology & Ice Cream Fair

An evening full of fun viewing the many pieces of unique artwork and technology projects that were on display for KCSS families, friends, and students to view at St. Aloysius Campus. The many pieces were created by the preschool through grade two students during the school year. The technology projects of a book of prayers and ABC books were created by students during computer class. Ice cream was also served the the KCSS Home & School and an Open House was available for interested families.

Little Theatre

The second grade students practiced the skills of using scripts, memorizing, having poise and posture, using personal creativity, speaking in front of a large audience, working together, learning from mistakes, and respecting each other.

The Little Theatre this year consisted of two opening songs called "SAY HELLO" and "READ AND ROCK", then two plays: PETER RABBIT and THE THREE LITTLE PIGS. Little Theatre always ends with songs about Jesus. They were "JESUS IS HERE" and "WALKING WITH THE LORD".

Holy Week Retreat

On Wednesday, April 20 KCSS students (K-8) gathered in the afternoon at the Holy Cross Campus for a Holy Week Retreat. We started together with prayer before going to 4 different stations throughout the school building. Afterwards, the fifth grade students led their class mates in silence to the gym for a final prayer and reenactment of the Last Supper.

Mrs. Grootemont from East Savings Bank came to Holy Cross. she came as part of the Million Child Challenge to teach children how to save money. She read a wonderful story to third graders all about the importance of saving money. Afterwards she presented each student with a certificate of participation.

The 8th graders at Holy Cross once again followed the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Mrs. Opsteen-Van Dyke;s language arts class. As it happens every year, a few students declared that some day they would like to try mushing too. well, 8th graders recently had the opportunity to meet a former students of Mrs. OVD's that did just that. Alisha and her dog Cookie came and spoke to the students about her adventures giving sled dog tours in New Hampshire and Alaska. While in Alaska last summer Alisha had the opportunity to run Iditarod champion Martin Buser's dogs on Mendenhall Glacier. The 8th graders enjoyed seeing the pictures of her adventures and meeting retired sled dog,Cookie.

The third grade at Holy Cross recently completed their Junior Achievement sessions. The program was taught by Mrs. Schumacher. She taught them things like how to plan a city, how to start a business, how to start a newspaper, and how to handle money. This special day was scheduled during Catholic Schools Week but because of a snow day it was rescheduled which made the students really happy! First Grade Stone Soup

After reading the story Stone Soup and finsihing a unit of study on the food pyramid, the first grade students made their own batch of stone soup for a Thanksgiving celebration. They each brought a small amount of an ingredient to be used in the soup, cleaned and prepared the vegetables, and followed a recipe. The result was a tastey and great smelling soup. They all understood that working together makes the task easier and more fun!

Thanksgiving Food Collection

St. Aloysius Campus students and staff during their Liturgy before Thanksgiving break took up a collection of non perishable food items and personal care products to donate to the Kaukauna Food Pantry in thanksgiving of all that they have been blessed with. Grade 2 Junior Achievement

Grade 2 participates in a program called Junior Achievement. People from the community come in and teach the students through activities how a community works. Third Grade Loves to Read

The third grade students have been doing a great deal of reading lately. They have really enjoyed all the different stories they have read. The last book they read was about the Titanic and learning about the supposedly "unsinkable" ship. As a fun activity the students thought about the Green Bay Packers and all the injuries they have had. So, they thought it would be fun to design new book jackets for books some of the players might enjoy reading!

The Building for Kids

Grades K-1-2 visiting the Building for Kids in Appleton to explore their world on their level. They were able to see how it would be to fly an airplane, operate a crane, care for children as a doctor, nurse or in a childcare setting. Students were able to observe how and why it is important for the human body to have some gross functions. The students found this very interesting!

Fun in Physical Education

The second grade had lots of fun in Physical Education class. Their teacher gave them the opportunity to move around and use their throwing, putting, tossing, catching, aiming, and balancing skills with Halloween activities. To put them in the Halloween mood some of the activities included tossing a rubber rat in a basket, putting a plastic eyeball, and bowling with ghost pins. Halloween themed music was played for the students' enjoyment. Teacher children that movement is both beneficial for their health and fun at the same time.

All Saint's Day

Mrs. Kortz's second graders represented just a few saints of the Catholic Church during the Liturgy on All Saint's Day at St. Aloysius Campus. Some of the saints pictured, along with Fr. Jerry, are St. Francis Cabrini, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Katharine Drexel, St. Joseph, St. Damien, and St. Christopher. Each student read a little biography of their saint during Liturgy. The message given was that we are all called to holiness by accepting God's will with joy and following the example of those who have been canonized as saints. The entire school sang "When the Saints Come Marching In" as the closing song. Student participated by singing and marching along.

Surprise for the Post Office

Students are making a special delivery to the Kaukauna Post Office. They are being a good neighbor and taking a special surprise that the students at Holy Cross and St. Aloysius made. They made Valentine's Day Wreaths that can be hung up in honor of all the Veterans that served our country.

All of these students are wearing a CAP today at school to let others know they are pledging to use drugs only for the purposes they were intended. They are doing this an activity for RED RIBBON WEEK (October 25-31) for Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week. The students could be as creative as they wish in coming up with a hat to wear to school for this event.

Kaukauna Library Reading Program

Little Theatre

Mrs. Kortz’s Little Theater is a Language Arts program that the second grade puts on each spring at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System. This year it involved puppetry, a play called "Choosing the Easter Rabbit", songs like "It's a Beautiful Day" and "Walking With Jesus". Each student wrote and shared a short introduction about them self. The students share their creative God-given talents with family and friends.

Third graders are sharing their "Secret Message" science project with fourth graders. The third grade put on a "mini Science Fair" for all the of fourth grade. The students got into groups and selected several different experiments to write up for their display boards. During the fair they demonstrated the experiments for the students. Each write up included Problem, Hypothesis, Materials, Steps, and Conclusion.

Mother's Day Tea

First graders of St. Aloysius Campus treated their Moms to a Mother's Day Tea on May 7. They performed four skits: Mr. Maybe, Six Wise Travelers, Supper with the Queen, and The Rabbits and the Wolf.

They also did a poem/pantomime called "Dedicated to All Mothers" and a special Mom version of the ABC song, a tribute to the Blessed Mother Mary, and the closing song "A Blessing for Mothers" was sung with actions. Gifts were presented to the Moms with a poem about flowers (typed by the students) and a sewn flower pin. Of course, the favorite part of the program for the children was serving punch and cookies.

Both of these pictures show Mrs. Grootemont, Administrative Assistant, at East Wisconsin Savings Bank in Kaukauna reading a fun story to both third grade classes at Holy Cross School. The story was all about wanting things but realizing a person just might have to wait and save to purchase those extra fun things. The students also received a certificate and a little Piggy Bank as a way of reminding them about the lessons they learned today about being wise with their money to make sure they will have enough to do all they want to do in the future.

Earth Day 2010 at St. Aloysius Campus

Preschool saw a butterfly come out of its cocoon on Earth Day. They are feeding it sugar water and oranges. When it is big enough they will release it outside.

Pre K used their Weekly Reader to find ways how to help the Earth not just on Earth Day but everyday!

Kindergarteners read a book “The Great Kapok Tree” on Earth Day 2010. They cut out leaves and wrote on them how they could help our planet earth. The leaves were hung on their very own Kapok tree outside their classroom.

First graders cleaned up the playground and sport court area on Earth Day. They see that people don’t always use the trash container when they have garbage. Their message to everyone everyday is, “Don’t litter the Earth it is our home that God has created for us”!

Second graders decided to create Spring Art Characters out of recyclable items for their Earth Day project. They also are sending a thank you letter to the Thousand Island Environmental Center for helping us to enjoy our beautiful nature in our community.

V.F.W. Post 3319

Mr. Willie Rowe (pictured) and other members of V.F.W. Post 3319 of Kaukauna visited students at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic to thank them for the beautiful cards the students sent them thanking the veterans for the campuses new American flag. Each veteran shared their story and saluted the children. Mrs. Helen Kortz led the school with a prayer for veterans and Fr. Jerry Pastors gave them a special blessing. The pledge of Allegiance was recited and everyone sang God Bless America with motions. The children then saluted the veterans. Afterwards students and staff shared handshakes and hugs with the veterans thanking them for their sacrifices for our country. A beautiful and touching ceremony was experienced by all.

V is for Vacation

In celebration of the letter V, Mrs. Ortner's Pre-kindergarten decided to take a vacation to the beach. In preparation the class brainstormed what they would need to pack in a suitcase for their adventure. The children really have active imaginations but they all remembered to bring their toothbrushes. The days activities included fishing for ocean fish using their counting skills, reading books on the makeshift ocean shore equipped with beach towels to protect them from the "carpet sand." They also had a volleyball game with a balloon and finished the day singing "The Coconut Song" under the direction of Mrs. W. By the time the vacation day ended all of the children were happy from their adventure and no one was sunburned as they also remembered the sunscreen. Where will the Pre-K go next year? Volunteer Appreciation

On Thursday, April 15 we showed our appreciation to our volunteers in a special way. During our All System Liturgy, volunteers received a flower and special blessing. After Liturgy our special guests were treated to a reception with entertainment provided by some of our wonderful students!

These third grade students began the baseball season by having a fun day of science baseball, creative writing, social studies baseball and decorating their own baseball necklace. The students proudly decorated their necklaces showing support for their favorite baseball team. They all seemed to enjoy themselves very much even those students that didn't know very much about baseball.

Junior Achievement

First graders at St. Aloysius School are participating in the Junior Achievement Program. Mrs. Patty Van Oudenhoven, who works at Appleton Coated--Combined Locks, is a Junior Achievement volunteer who visits the First Graders once a week and talks to them about the variety of job choices they will have when they grow and how they will make a difference in the community.

Holy Cross Census

Both third grade classes at Holy Cross School have prepared a School Wide Census for each student to complete. The questions are all things pertaining to school issues like: What foreign language might you have an interested in taking? or Do you have homework each and every night? Once each class completes their census the third graders will then be tallying up the results and sharing them with the whole school including all the teachers and principal. The big job of tallying should be completed by April 16th. This was a great project for the students to be working on as our country is working on complete a Census too.

Living Stations

The fifth grade students at Holy Cross shared the “Living Stations” for the whole student body on Mach 30th. In this picture at the left doing the reading is Haileigh, in the center of the picture is Bailey as Jesus. Standing next to Jesus holding the cross is Trent. Then at the far right is Caroline doing some of the reading for this station. The rest of the 5th grades in this class are kneeling and expressing sorrow that Jesus has been crucified.

Designer Bunnies

Mrs. Johnson’s first graders at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System, created their very own designer bunnies to celebrate the joyful spirit of Easter. Students drew the bunny face added clothing, jewelry, bows, or whatever made them unique. The bunny’s arms, legs, and head were then attached to the body to make a very big bunny!

High School Students Visit Second Grade

Mr. Eric Thiede’s high school students visited preschool, pre k and second grade classrooms as part of their sociology class. They observed student’s behavior at this level in the classroom and compared their observations to students at the high school level. Mr. Thiede and some of his students are former students of Kaukauna Catholic School System. It is always nice to have them come and visit us.

Career Fair

Holy Cross guidance counselor, Mrs. Teri Ricker, went along with the 8th graders to a Career Fair on March 24th, 2010. The students had been working with Mrs. Ricker to research different occupations and what type of education the students would need to be working in that field in the future. This Career Fair gave the students an up close and personal chance to listen to people who are presently working in these occupations. The students came back from the Fair with information on occupations that they really had not thought about for themselves in the future. This was a wonderful experience for the students.

Irish Math - Kindergarten Style

Kindergartners in Ms. Richter’s class had a fun math class on St. Patrick’s Day. They used Lucky Charms to learn how to graph. Sorting, counting, color and shape recognition were skills used to learn “Irish Math”. It was a lot of fun and yummy too!

Original Stories by Eighth Grade

On March 18th the students from St. Aloysius Campus traveled over to Holy Cross Campus to listen to original stories written by 8th grade students. The 8th graders had spent a lot of time this third quarter to write these stories. Their motivation was once all their stories were finished they would then share them with these younger students. All the students from St. Aloysius thoroughly enjoyed the stories.

Jewels in the King's Crown

Preparing for the Art & Technology Fair in April

These 3rd grade students are doing a project for the school Art and Technology Fair in April. The students are taking drawing instructions from a website. They are listening to the artist as to how to do the drawing, as well as, seeing the drawing being completed step by step. With it being on the computer the students are able to pause, the instructor if they need to, and also back it up if they want to see or hear the directions again. The students are having a great time following along and doing drawings that they are very proud of and they should be. This is just another way of using Computer Technology as part of the school curriculum.

Kindergartners celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2 by reading the story of Green Eggs and Ham. They were treated to actual green eggs and ham prepared by their teacher, Ms. Richter. Some students ate it right up others a bit more hesitant. Later they read their favorite Dr. Seuss books and wore Dr. Seuss hats.

Collecting Gently Used Books

This week the students brought in gently used books that will be given to St. Vincent DePaul store here in Kaukauna. The students are making a real effort to be thinking of things that will help others. This is one way the students feel they can help others that don’t have as much as they do.

Fang's Reading Club

Fang from the Timber Rattlers visited with students during lunch time to promote “Fang’s Reading Club” with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. It is an incentive-based reading program. The students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills while earning prizes from the Timber Rattlers! When they complete the program, and will hit a HOME RUN by reading, they will be rewarded with a complimentary ticket, hot dog and soda voucher to KCSS Family Night.

Jump Rope for Heart

During the week of February 16-19 students participated in “Jump Rope for Heart”. All forms of jump rope, for example double Dutch, were taught to the students by Miss Rosenbaum, their physical education teacher while having a lot of fun raising money for the American Heart Association. The day the Olympics began in Vancouver, Canada (February 12th) the third grade classes had their own mini Olympic Quiz Day in the computer lab. They had all kinds of questions and activities to do on the computer to earn points. Then medal of Gold, Silver and Bronze were awarded to those that earned the highest point total. This was a really fun way for the students to learn about the Winter Olympic Games.

Our Neighbors are Special!

Here are four of the fourth graders from Holy Cross School in Kaukauna getting all bundled up to go on their way to deliver special Valentines to the school neighbors. The students will be surprising all the neighbors around the school with red paper heart which has a secret place for a note saying “Our neighbors are so very special to us” along with little chocolate heart. Just the students way of letting the neighbors know they are appreciated by the whole school. The fourth graders really had fun going around and delivering these Valentines.

Children 3 years old through kindergarten and their families came together for an evening Valentine Party at St. Aloysius campus. They did crafts, decorated Valentine cookies and had lots of fun! On Friday students and staff dressed in red and white, and shared valentine cards with each other to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Hooray for 100! First grade students at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System celebrated 100th Day on Thursday, February 4, 2010. It is the 100th day of school. They collected 100 items to show the value of that number. Then, with the help of family members, those 100 items were arranged into a creative design. Some of the items were tootsie rolls in the shape of a heart, popcorn as snowflakes and a snowman, pennies spelling out their name, jewels creating a watch, cereal and candy creating the number one hundred. They wore special 100 day classes, strung 100 fruit loops, and enjoyed a book titled, One Hundred Hungry Ants, read to them by Miss Penny Johnson, the librarian. A few students show off their 100 glasses as they celebrate one hundred day!

St. John Baptist de La Salle Honoree

The Kaukauna Catholic School System announced the Honoree of the St. John Baptist de La Salle award on Thursday, February 4th all the all system liturgy. This saint was a French educator and priest whom was also the founder of the Christian Brothers. He spent most of this life teaching children of the very poor. Saint John Baptist de la Salle was born in 1651 and died in 1719. He is considered to be one of the most distinguished educators of modern times. So, it was only fitting that Mr. Ken Wydeven receive this first honor. Mr. Wydeven has given over 30 years of his life to the education of students and just like St. John Baptist de La Salle he is considered to be by all those students an excellent caring teacher.

Port Washington Light Station & Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Holy Cross 8th graders recently took a field trip to two of Wisconsin’s maritime treasures—the Port Washington Light Station and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. At the lighthouse the students learned about life as a lighthouse keeper and were able to climb the tower to view Lake Michigan as well as Milwaukee in the distance.

Each student is currently researching a Great Lakes Lighthouse and writing a paper on it. They are then writing a children’s story that takes place at their chosen lighthouse, using computer-edited photographs from the field trip as illustrations. The eighth graders will then have a chance to read their stories to the St. Al’s students during a future Buddy Time.

After spending time in Port Washington, the field trip continued up the Lake Michigan coast to Manitowoc where the students learned about Wisconsin’s contributions during WWII, particularly in building submarines. They had an opportunity to tour the U.S.S. Cobia and see what life was like on a sub!

Second Grade Visitor

Father Tom Pomeroy, pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna, visited with second graders at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System recently and shared his knowledge of the Catholic faith. Much preparation involving parish, school, and home goes into preparing students to receive Jesus for the very first time in the sacrament of First Eucharist. Father Tom Pomeroy, pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna, visited with second graders at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System to share his knowledge of our Catholic religion. Students asked many questions about their Catholic faith and how they can prepare themselves to receive First Holy Eucharist for the very first time which will be after Easter. Many months of preparation involving parish, school and at home will take place in order for the children to be ready to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Winter Olympic Games at Holy Cross

Students at Holy Cross Campus will be gearing up to participate in their inside Winter Olympic events. Going along with the upcoming Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada the students will be having their own games on the afternoon of February 5th. They will be playing games like the following: Olympic Trivia, Pass the Olympic Rings Around, Identifying Flags of Countries, and Snowball Toss. The students will be divided up into teams with a mixture of students from all the grades on each team. Then once the games have concluded there will be an awards ceremony in the gym followed by a faculty vs. 8th graders volleyball game. The students all looked forward to playing these games at the end of Catholic Schools Week.

Welcome Sgt. Scott Van Zeeland

SGT. Scott Van Zeeland, a Kaukauna native and graduate of Kaukauna Catholic Schools System, came to Holy Cross to speak with the fifth graders about his recent deployment to Iraq. He answered all of their many questions. He spoke about the Iraqi people and their customs. He talked about the role of the U.S. military in that war. He touched on the weapons used, the food, the weather, awards and badges and life in general in the war zone of Iraq. Each student received a National Guard Coin as a reminder of his visit.

SGT. Van Zeeland presented fifth grade teacher (and his former teacher) with an American flag that had flown over his compound in Iraq on July 4, 2009. The accompanying certificate reads: “This is to certify that the Commander of Forward Operating Base Cropper has approved this Certificate of Authenticity for Ken Wydeven In Appreciation of Support From His Class. Flag was flown on Independence Day July 4, 2009. Certifying that his flag was flown proudly over Forward Operating Base Cropper during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010. May it always serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the defense and freedom of our great nation. Presented by: SGT. Scott E. Van Zeeland (former student)” SGT. Van Zeeland also presented Mr. Wydeven with an authentic coin from the 1st Squadron, 105th Cavalry, Wisconsin National Guard.

Collection and Prayers for Haiti

All the students have been working on doing jobs at home so they will have a little money to bring in for the Fourth Grade money collection that will be going for the Haitian people. The fourth grade teacher, Mr. Bizeau, had talked to the students about the earthquake that hit Haiti and right away the students started talking about what they could do to help the people. So, the money will be going to the Catholic Relief Services for Haiti. The students will be collecting the money up until January 29th, 2010. Right now the students have collected a little over $200 which is wonderful!

Kids on the Block

“The Kids on the Block” is a special Troupe of Puppets with an important message to teach awareness of abilities rather than disabilities, visited students in grades K-2 at St. Aloysius Campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System recently. Each performance involves a dialogue between puppets, followed by a session in which the puppets engage the students in an educational conversation of questions and answers, leaving students with a better understanding of what they have in common with someone who has a disability than not.

Ski Club

Holy Cross School in Kaukauna went on their first Ski Club trip Friday, (January 8th). Ski Club is for any student in grades 6-8th that would like to go along and improve their skiing skills. This is just a really nice time for the students to be together and have some fun outside of school. Many parents also go along on the trip to do some skiing or just spend time watching and chatting with other parents. This club has always been a very big hit with all the students.

May Your New Year Sparkle

“May Your New Year Sparkle” was the message Pre K students gave by using glitter to decorate ice skates as they learn about the letter I. They also stamped in the New Year of 2010 by using stamp paints. Pre K made paper snow globes, snowmen using scrap paper and paint. These projects helped them with shape, color, number recognition, fine motor skills, and organizing materials to create a final design.

Kristin Steede was brought to us on behalf the KEEN Foundation. The Keen Foundation encourages new and unique learning experiences in Kaukauna and promotes activities that benefit the community. Today is the first in a series of "Healthy Start" events that they have planned for the community.

Kristin Steede is a natural leader and tenacious young business entrepreneur who has never been afraid to address challenges head on. But with her fast-paced, always on-the-go lifestyle, a healthy diet and exercise often fell to the bottom of Kristin's priorities.

That all changed when Kristin, along with her -mother Cathy, were selected as contestants on the hit NBC reality TV show the Biggest Loser. After losing a total of 167 lbs, Kristin is ready to share what she has learned in hopes that it can help others.

Our students participated in a POP challenge from the show which is harder than it looks. A few teachers at the Holy Cross Campus participated in a "wall sit" challenge. Ask a student from Holy Cross how the teachers did and who won that challenge!

Advent

Advent is a time of preparing and waiting for the coming of Jesus. The children of St. Aloysius campus of the Kaukauna Catholic School System are eagerly awaiting the coming of Jesus. During this Advent season they are preparing by performing their Christmas program, making Advent chains, opening doors on the Advent calendar, and lighting the Advent candles.

The students in fifth grade have been busy making a little Advent gift for the neighbors around the school. Now the fourth grade students will be taking the gift and going through the neighborhood leaving a little surprise on the doors of all the neighbors around the school. This is something that has become a very big part of the school life here at Holy Cross. The students come up with different gifts to give to the neighbors just to let them know they are appreciated and thought about by the students. Giving and do for others is something the students are learning here at school to do and do often.

Holy Cross Campus Band

The Holy Cross 6-8th grade band students, under the directions of Ms. Michelle DeGroot, were invited on December 3rd to play at The Bank of Kaukauna. The students played some favorite Christmas music that went right along with the Christmas Cookies the bank was serving. It was just a special time for everyone to sit back with a nice decorated cookie and listen to beautiful Christmas music. Then adding in just a touch of snow outside it really put everyone in the Christmas Spirit.

As a culmination to a science unit, Mrs. Kortz’s 2nd grade class had a "WHATS'S-A-MATTER" party. They made root beer floats. The ice cream is the solid, the root beer is the liquid and the carbonation in the root beer is the gas. Science is fun and good-tasting!

The third graders did a great job with this project. First we talked all about community and what a group like the Packers mean to a community. Then for creative writing the students wrote recipes (funny ones) which will be sent along with this pictures. In computer class the students have been typing letters to NFL teams. What the letters spell out is the following: Please come for lunch at Holy Cross School. We will see if we get an answer - no matter what it was a fun time for the students.

These pictures are showing the two gentlemen from the Elks club presenting all of our third graders with dictionaries and book markers at Holy Cross School in Kaukauna. This picture is taken with the third graders of Mrs. Becky Haen receiving the gifts. The students were so excited when they started looking through the book and found it also contained information on each and every state in the United States (which they are studying about right now in Social Studies Class). Plus on the back page the there was the longest word in the English language which contain 1,909 letters and was a term for the formula C1289H2051N343O375S8.

Fire Safety

The Kaukauna Fire Department visited classrooms at St. Aloysius campus during the month of October and talked with the students on Fire Prevention. The theme this year is “Stay Fire Smart”. This year’s theme emphasizes what everyone can do to prevent fires in our homes by being fire smart. They stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, testing and cleaning them monthly and changing the batteries twice a year and having a home escape plan. The fire department provided some valuable fire safety tips if fire should break out in their school or home.

Explore at Holy Cross Campus

The 6-8th grade students are very busy with their Explore classes this semester. The students have the opportunity to sign up for one of the class offerings to be held each Friday during the 1st semester for 40 minutes. The students could select from the following: School Store, Forensics, Liturgy Planning, Service with a Smile, Church Choir, Dive into Books, Public Relations and Mathematical Art. Right now the Service with a Smile group is sponsoring cancer awareness which the whole school system is participating in. Then some of the Public Relations group is putting together a newspaper called the “Shinning Times” which is given to all the students at our other campus St. Aloysius for the Pre-school-2nd graders to enjoy. Then another part of the Public Relations group has been busy putting together a Power Point for our website and the final group of students, which are in Public Relations, have been busy writing original stories with the third graders which they will be putting in one hardbound book. The students all look forward to taking part in these different groups because this is another way for them to take responsibility for planning events the rest of the student body can participate in.

October Band Concert

This was a wonderful event on October 15. The cafeteria was all decorated in the Halloween theme - students were serving punch and decorated Halloween cookies and the music the students played was wonderful! They played to a packed cafeteria and a good time was had by one and all. Ms. Michelle DeGroot is the band director and she did an outstanding job getting the students ready to perform.

Neighbors are Wonderful!

Students in grades 4 & 5 made and delivered special treats to neighbors that live around the Holy Cross campus on Thursday, October 15th. This is just something to let the neighbors know just how much we appreciate them and to thank them for maybe, at times, putting up with some inconveniences as our playground balls fly over in their yard or having to work around our school buses each and everyday. This is just one way we to show our neighbors how special they are to us.

Crazy Hat Day

One of the Holy Cross Explore Groups is sponsoring a “Crazy Hat Day”. Oh, this isn’t just any hat day it is one where you purchase the hat at the school store and decorate it anyway you wish. The hats will be worn during classes that day which will allow all those creative students time to show off their creativity to the rest of the student body. There just might be several teachers also taking part in this fun activity and showing their decorating skills off to the students! This is just another way of building school spirit in a fun way.
