Moving Stories

Fourth Grade students have been busy writing very moving stories about “What Happened to Them on Their Summer Vacation”. The stories were printed on filmstrip paper to give that moving affect. What a fun way to show their writings.

Buddies

On Thursday, September 24th, both Holy Cross and St. Aloysius Schools came together to do a buddy activity. They were making bookmarkers for Grandparent’s Day. Grandparent’s Day will be held at both campuses on Thursday, October 8th. There will be a Liturgy at Holy Cross Campus at 8:20 am followed by tours of the classrooms. This is the time for the students to show their grandparents or special person just what they are doing in school these days. Then at 10:00 am St. Aloysius Campus will be giving tours of their classrooms and showing off all they are doing. All the students look forward to this very special day.

Catherine Street Mural

For the past several years, students in Mrs. Opsteen-Van Dyke’s 8th grade literature class at Holy Cross School have read the short story, “The War of the Wall.” The story tells the tale of a community that has a wall that is full of graffiti, gum, etchings, and various marks that hold memories for the youth.

One day, an artist comes in and starts painting over the wall. The kids of the community are irate, but after watching and waiting, they are surprised with a beautiful mural that depicts all of the important people, places, and events of their community.

As a pre-reading activity, Mrs. OVD’s students created their own mural that depicts what makes Kaukauna special. Then the students walked down to the Catherine Street mural and compared their murals with the beautifully painted wall. They took note of what the two murals had in common and also observed what special parts of Kaukauna could still be added to the wall. It was a great community tie-in with the literature curriculum.
